Why MagWall.nz is the perfect solution for off-the-grid living

Throughout 2023, we worked closely with Daryl Taylor, MagWall.nz client who has recently built an off-the-grid home in New Zealand's Manawatu region, using our Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs) and other renewable energy sources like solar panels, insulated glazed windows and doors, and more.

Daryl takes us on a journey through the design intricacies, savvy cost-saving choices, and more, offering a firsthand glimpse into the creation of his sustainable haven.

Tell us about your project and why the decision to build an off-grid home?

Our project revolves around the construction of an off-grid home on a rural property. The decision to pursue this unique housing approach stems from a combination of factors aimed at creating a more sustainable and independent lifestyle.

Why the decision to use MagWall.nz SIPs over traditional building materials?

We opted for MagWall.nz SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) over traditional building materials primarily to align with our goal of achieving a projected monthly cost reduction.

SIPs allowed us to enhance insulation, ensuring a warmer and healthier home environment. The decision underscores our commitment to both financial efficiency and the well-being of our living space.

From a power perspective, how are you powering your home?

Our home is powered exclusively by solar energy, operating completely off-grid.

What renewable generation sources are you using throughout the home?

We've integrated a heat recovery system and a wood fire for warmth, ensuring a consistent and dry indoor environment. We've opted for Upvc windows and doors to enhance the energy efficiency, addressing thermal condensation concerns commonly associated with older homes. This combination of systems reflects our commitment to renewable energy and sustainable living.

From an associated costs perspective, how much, on average, do you believe you’ll save on running expenses each year?

While we can't provide an exact figure, we anticipate substantial monthly savings compared to our previous home. Implementing energy-efficient systems makes us expect a significant reduction in running expenses.

What were the processes involved between you, your architect, and the council for your project to be approved and then constructed?

This was a challenging experience as I feel there is still not enough understanding regarding this type of construction.

The architects engaged with the council and given that this type of building was a new building method, there were some additional questions from the council, which can be expected for a project of this kind. Overall, though, this only added a little more time to the process as a whole compared to traditional building processes.

What are the sustainability and environmental factors of the home?

Our home prioritizes a warmer and drier internal environment for improved health.

Upvc doors and windows contribute to reduced thermal losses, enhancing energy efficiency. The external steel cladding provides low maintenance and ensures longevity with easy care, aligning with our commitment to a sustainable and comfortable living space.
